One of the most commonly asked questions is, "When is the best time for salmon fishing on Langara Island?" The short answer is there really aren't any specific dates that are better than others, but rather different opportunities throughout our relatively short operating season. You see, Langara Island Lodge is only open from late May to early September. This condensed season gives our guests prime fishing from the beginning to the end of each summer. 

From our opening in late May to mid-June, our guests enjoy some spectacular chinook (king) salmon fishing in local waters. These fish are fresh off of the open ocean and on the hunt for herring and needlefish along the shores of Langara and Graham Islands. Langara is often the first major feeding station for chinooks coming off their long journey from the open Pacific before migrating south down the coast. So May and June really give anglers at Langara the first opportunity to catch fish that may be heading to rivers on BC's central coast, the Fraser River, the Columbia, or as far south as northern California.

May and June at Langara also offer some excellent ground fishing for halibut and lingcod. The cold Pacific waters and untouched western shores of Haida Gwaii teem with life in May and June. 

It is important to note that we don't have any significant pushes of coho (silver) salmon during the earlier part of the season. Coho salmon don't generally arrive anywhere on the coast until mid-July. Langara is the exception, where we do welcome cohos earlier; usually by mid-June there are more targetable numbers locally. 

And what's the weather at Langara in May and June? Well, generally conditions are cool, so pack your toque (that's Canadian for beanie) and some warm layers. All guests are supplied with Mustang marine clothing to keep them extra snug while on the water, and of course our snack boat is loaded with hot chocolates, freshly brewed coffees, and warm treats to keep everyone fuelled!
