Pre-Trip FAQs

Travel to Island Lodge

Traveling to Langara is easy. You'll board our private charter flight in Vancouver and fly to Masset, BC, a small town near the lodge. Upon arrival in Masset, you'll be greeted by a lodge representative and will then board a helicopter for the 15 minute flight to the lodge. All travel from Vancouver is included in our package pricing.

Our charter flight departs from the YVR South Terminal. Check-in time is 8:30 AM on the first day of your trip. There is parking at the airport if you are local and shuttles from nearby hotels, including the Vancouver Fairmont Airport.

Your bag will be checked, but you can bring a carry-on bag on the flight. You will be required to show government-issued ID and for US guests, a passport is required. It's a good idea to pack any medication and electronics in your carry-on. Upon arrival at the lodge, you will have time to change before fishing that afternoon.

Charter flight and helicopter boarding passes are issued at check-in. You will also receive your fishing license at this time. Boarding passes are not sent prior to the trip.

Arriving at the Lodge

You can expect to arrive at the lodge by helicopter between around 1:00 and 1:30 PM. The scenic flight is all part of the experience; make sure you have your camera ready.

Once the helicopter lands, our ground crew will help you disembark. You will then be greeted by a member of our front-of-house team and brought up to the lodge via the hillside tram. Rooms are preassigned, and you will be shown your room and given a tour of the lodge. A welcome lunch is served, and then it's time to go out fishing for the afternoon!

If you have a carry-on item, it will be loaded in the back of the helicopter with your luggage. Upon landing at the lodge, the helicopter is unloaded, and all luggage, including carry-ons, will be brought directly to your room prior to fishing. Luggage and carry-ons will be tagged in Vancouver. We ask that you do not remove the colour-coded tag system until after your trip.

Get Ready to Go Fishing!

Each lodge has its own dry room. You'll find your own personal locker with Mustang marine clothing and fitted boots ready for you. Some warm underlayers are always a good idea. There are Yeti coolers available for your use to pack drinks and snacks, and don't forget your fishing license. And be sure to bring a hat and sunglasses!

Most of the water we fish at Langara is protected, and we rarely fish far offshore. If you are susceptible to a queasy tummy, taking some non-drowsy Gravol is a cure-all! Gravol, sunscreen, and lip balm are complimentary in our dry rooms.

Your guide will be waiting for you on the Island Lodge docks, ready to go! Our dock staff will greet you and help you find your assigned boat and guide for the trip.

Our earliest start time is 6:00 AM in the early season and 6:30 in the later part of the summer when the days are shorter. Most guests opt to come in for lunch, as the Langara fishing grounds are a short run from our docks. If you'd like to fish all day, then you can order lunch for a pick-up at the dock and head right back out! The latest we fish is until 6:30 PM.

Around the Lodge

Whatever you're most comfortable in is more than fine. Dress at the lodge is casual.

Yes, all buildings have dedicated high-speed wireless Starlink. There is also a landline phone.

Both hot and continental breakfasts are offered each morning. A service boat will come out and deliver coffees and breakfast sandwiches mid-morning. Lunch is served at the lodge from 12-2 PM. The service boat also comes out in the afternoon with snacks, drinks, and sandwiches. Dinner is served at 7:30 PM.

Absolutely! Simply let us know of any dietary restrictions or allergies when completing your guest information form, and we'll pass that information on to our kitchen staff, who are happy to accommodate you.

All About Your Catch

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans decides catch limits each year, and there are sometimes changes mid-season. Generally, each person can keep 8 salmon per trip and 1 to 2 halibut depending on their size. The limit on lingcod is 3 per person.

Your fish will be filleted, vacuum packages and flash frozen at the lodge.

If you would like further processing of your fish, it will be sent directly to our partnered cannery for further processing. Choose from smoking, canning, or portioning. The cannery will then send your catch frozen directly to your home. Processing time can take 6-8 weeks. Learn more on our Care of Catch page.

That's also a great option! Your frozen fish will be packed in styrofoam boxes with freezer packs. Under most conditions fish will remain frozen for up to 20 hours of travel. The Vancouver Fairmont Airport Hotel has freezer space to store fish if you are staying a night before your flight home.

There is no issue transporting sport-caught fish to the United States. If you are travelling outside of the US or Canada, there may be restrictions based on the importing rules of your home country.

Returning Home

Nobody ever wants to leave, but don't worry; there's always next year! Our unique fishing program gets you out on the water so you'll have the chance at one last morning of fishing. When back at the lodge, you'll have time to shower and enjoy a beautiful brunch before it's time to go. Front of house staff will assist in getting you to the helipad for departure.

Without weather delays, our charter flight usually lands in Vancouver around 4:30 PM. There is generally enough time to catch a connecting flight, or you can opt to stay in Vancouver.
