We're never in a rush to wrap up the season. Part of that is because we have some outstanding fishing and weather well into September. In recent years, the season at Island Lodge has been condensed, with our operational year usually wrapping up at the end of the first week of September. Previous to this, we operated well into the second week of the month. The only reason behind closing a bit earlier is that many of our guests are back to work or with kids back in school. The wonderful fishing continues well into late September.

September is a neat mix of opportunities. There are later-season chinook salmon in local waters, with a healthy sprinkling of bigger mature fish. There are also strong coho numbers in September, with big northern coho in the 10-13 pound range, with some even bigger! Solid halibut and bottom fishing continue from when we first open in late May right through our last trip. 

The weather is generally quite pleasant in Haida Gwaii during September, with warmer days than you might find in June and even July. As the days shorten, mornings are met with stunning sunrises, not experienced earlier in the summer, as the days then are significantly longer. Evening sunsets bathe the lodge in a warm glow on clear evenings.
